LONDON, UK Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has asked the United Kingdom to resettle 100,000 Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh to alleviate the country's refugee burden.
According to a statement from the Bangladesh High Commission in London, the proposal was made during a bilateral meeting with his British counterpart Elizabeth Truss.
The foreign minister stated that the resettlement would allow the UK, a global leader in justice and human rights, to provide a better life for the refugees while reducing the unfair burden on Bangladesh.
Truss thanked Bangladesh for its generous hosting of the Rohingya and responded, "while the UK could look into it, the best solution to the Rohingya crisis lies in their safe and sustainable return to Myanmar."
Momen briefed Truss on the ongoing Rohingya crisis and the current stalemate in arranging for their safe and sustainable repatriation due to the Myanmar government's lack of commitment.
Truss reaffirmed the UK's commitment to resolving the crisis, saying the UK and the G7 and ASEAN nations would pressure Myanmar to resolve the protracted problem.
"Despite living proof of their persecution of Rohingyas and adjudication of their justice at the ICJ, the UK, and other Western countries continue to invest heavily in Myanmar," Momen said.
The UK has invested $2.5 billion in Myanmar in the last three years, and bilateral trade between the two countries is worth more than $500 million, according to Momen.
